Test Information

The Baseline can be taken either 18 months, 12 months or 6 months prior to the exams, so we have different testing points throughout the year.

The core test looks at a student's academic abilities in maths, English and reasoning but the format of the test is different from what you can expect in a typical mock exam as we are also looking to gauge a student's potential and learning style - not just their current academic ability.

The test:

  • Total of 2.5 hours with a 20 minute break.
  • The English component is 50 minutes long and will test comprehension and composition skills.
  • The maths paper is 50 minutes long and will test core skills as well as worded and puzzle questions.
  • There is a 30 minute reasoning paper split between VR (verbal) and NVR (non verbal) questions.

What we offer:

  • Our report will comment on a student's current preparedness and suggest a programme of study with individually formulated areas of focus.
  • We will recommend target schools, reading lists and construct a practice plan with recommended resources.
  • Scripts are returned annotated with in depth comments and notes.
  • Optional face to face consultation to receive specific feedback (additional fee).

Each test has a 20 minute break in the middle and drinks and a snack will be proved. Students are welcome to bring their own stationery, but this is also provided if needed.

When placing your order, don't forget that Torchlight Members receive a significantly discounted rate - just enter your code (see our Newsletter or contact the office) at the checkout stage.

FAQs

If you have any questions at all about the content of the mock tests or how, when or where we deliver the tests, please have look at the FAQs below or contact directly in the office.

Where do the mock tests take place?

The Mock tests will all take place at Barnes Primary School in Barnes, South West London. Here is a map and details to reach the school.

What do students need to bring with them on the day?

Students can bring their own stationery but we will also provide all of this as required. We recommend that all students bring water and they can bring a snack, but please bear in mind that this is only to be eaten in the break and not during the tests! We always provide a small snack at the beginning of the break.

When will we get the results?

We aim to mark and return the papers by the Friday following the test weekend, though we are often able to return them well before this. We put a premium on careful, in-depth feedback, so we do ask for your patience in this regard.

How do I know what a 'good' result is?

We will ask for the student's target schools when you make the booking, so we will set the papers and mark in the context of these goals. In addition to this, we set target scores by assigning each school to one of three tiers determined by our years of experience testing. You can measure your son or daughter's results against these benchmarks.

If you select multiple mocks, we will also set specific topic goals to track progress.

Where do you get your papers from?

All of our papers are written in-house and we have the ability to tailor each exam to the needs of the student and the requirements of the selected school. For instance, if you require a multiple choice maths paper or an extra dictation exam, we will provide the appropriate paper.

Can my son/daughter have extra time?

We can absolutely make provisions for students who qualify for extra time. There is a small additional fee to cover the extra invigilation required, please contact the office for details.

Can my son/daughter take the test at home or online?

We are very happy to post you the papers to be taken at your home, you will just need to return the scripts to us for marking.

At the moment, we do not offer an online test.
